To "Kill and Tell", that is the question.

This has nothing to do with politics! So don't make it so.

I was thinking about the Osama killing last night, especially after watching the news about the protestors "For" Osama, and I asked myself these question:

Would we have been better off, if we didn't say a word about Osama's death ?

Does advertising his death make it worse for American citizens ?

Would Al Qaeda have kept Osama's Death a secret ?

Would forcing Al Qaeda to bring out the news have been better ? They lie all the time anyway and not everyone likes them.

What are your thoughts?

My anwers to your questions

1. Probably but obama would not have made political points.

2. Only time will tell.

3. For Sure

4. Really wouldn't matter because anyway it lands it will forever be like elvis and kennedy (every now and again I hear they are still alive).

I would agree with #1 above no points scored if it wasnt advertised that we got him.

2) I dont think it makes any difference, this wont make Amercians any less safe then before. They might kill Americans and say it is for revenge but they want us dead period.

3) No I think they would have paraded him around and made him into a huge heroe and a shrine larger then any for them to worship him and become like him a murderer this would have been a huge recruiting tool for them if they had the body.

4) Better for them but worse for us as in #3

I'll bet no one has heard it from them; elvis and kennedy that is.

Sorry Rick. My bad!

I should have put in "But we took his body away". Kill, Take, Remain Silent about it.

I thought he had already died in a cave collapse or something before the administration announced that they had gotten him.

In a way it seemed less relevant then when they got Saddam in the worm hole.

It made people feel better but didn't change the strategic situation at all.

One thing it did is make me take another good look at that guy.

Osama was quite the actor standing in front of a cave with an AK-47 leaning against the wall and the prettyest hands I have ever seen on a man. This is a guy that is supposed to be roughing it? Of course not everyone believes he is dead.

It probably would have been better for all to have kept this under wraps. Better for America, better for US/Pakistani relations, better for US/MidEast relations.

The disjointed narrative in the aftermath is even more fodder for the conspiracy theorists.

At this point, the US government needs to come clean on everything, including the photos of the body. Otherwise, this wound is going to fester for quite a long time.

And Al Qaeda would have absolutely kept his death a secret. There is nothing more debilitating to an organization than admitting that the "leader" has been killed by his arch enemy.

#1 No. We do have the right to know and the need to know. The blood of many sons and daughters was spilled going after this man for the last ten years. The government has no right to hide these types of events from us.

#2 In the short term yes. In the long run no. It is now planted in some minds that we are stubborn and persistent.

    #3 Silly question.

#4 If Al Quieda had been the ones to announce his death, I assure you that his demise would have been painted as a picture of selfless martyrdom as he went down in a blaze of glory fighting for the people he so dearly loved.

Now as for being politically correct. I am Owl.

Hard to say.... There are so many "Black-Ops" that eventually come to light.

    • Wire tapping of underwater Soviet communications cables by the Navy.
    • Guns to one country for the release of hostages.
    • Walker/Ames spy activities.
    • Wire taps and break-ins by the Nixon Admin.
    • Water-boarding for Intel.
    • WWIII almost being started by a black bear in Wisconsin during Cuban Missile Crisis.

Some of the aforementioned I would expect American citizens to want to know about. Others are best if they don't know about them. National Security is a double-edge sword. We want to trust our government, but without knowing what they are doing in our name, how do we dare trust them?

I think advertizing his death is the right thing to do.

I think it does demoralize AQ and will weaken them politically.

I think in the next few months we may see more trouble for them.

They cannot last forever, no terror organization does.

Do we really need to see them? Seriously, politics aside for a moment; this murderer needs to be condemned to oblivion for eternity. His image erased from our minds. He does not deserve to occupy our thoughts. That's not to say we are to forget what we lost, not at all. Nor forget we are still fighting his sick ideology with those who think like him...but lets keep ours eyes collectively on seeing that we remain the country we were before his evil touched us. That we focus on being united, strong and moving beyond what he did.

Well, Obama did promise us transparency. This is a totally transparent indication that they are running out of deflections and will play this out as long as possible. Who cares if the pictures are gory? Ever watched T.V.?

I say the gorier the better, provide a graphic illustration of what we do to this type of animal. To the devil with sensitivity and political correctness, this is a war on terror, so let's terrify them and be done with it. We have much more important matters to deal with.

Sh your feelings are duly noted. As a grandfather I am not pleased at the idea of kids seeing these type of images. You can't keep them from it, even today's cartoons still show people getting blown up. If these images are as terrible as alleged, at least they are a true representation of what happens to evil people in the end.

I do indeed consider it a bit juvenile to flaunt our successes in the eyes of the world, sometimes it is necessary. "One picture is worth a thousand words." somebody said that.

Actually the older cartoons were worse, ask Wile E Coyote & Tom (from Tom & Jerry)...I don't know who they survived it all, lol. Seriously, although I'm aware it's not possible to shield them from everything, but I'll try as will you too I'm sure. Yes, it is representation of what happens to evil people in the end and I'm hoping that his end was more gruesome than what was reported and that karma literally bit him in half in the form of a shark.

No, though it could and should have been handled much much better.

Does advertising his death make it worse for American citizens ?

Why, will it make them hate us more? Not possible!

Would Al Qaeda have kept Osama's Death a secret ?

If we had vaporized the compound and they claimed he was killed we could just deny it. Making their accusations moot.

Would forcing Al Qaeda to bring out the news have been better ? They lie all the time anyway and not everyone likes them.

No they are sub humans and getting them to do something is like a horse, you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make them drink.

It has been my contention all along that what should have been done is this:

bin Laden is dead. He was killed in a firefight last night in Pakistan by US Navy Seals. His body was dumped at sea. Justice has been done. End of press conference.

      But that's just me.
